The red-hot Maize And Blue made a backstretch move to the top and powered away down the lane to clear conditioned rivals by 2-1/2 lengths and post his fifth straight victory at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday, July 11.

Maize And Blue marched out of post six in the $24,000 dash and raced into the first turn alongside outside starter Greenarrow Hanover (Bob McClure), with those two gliding past Toss Of The Dice (Mark MacDonald). Longshot Greenarrow Hanover pushed on to reach the quarter first in :27 but was circled by Maize And Blue and driver Louis-Philippe Roy in short order. Maize And Blue headed the field past the half in :56.3 and 1:24.4 without challenge, and he responded to Roy’s calls for speed with a :28.2 final quarter to seal the deal in 1:53.1, tying his lifetime mark set nine days ago. Toss Of The Dice picked off Greenarrow Hanover at the pylons for second.

Maize And Blue appears to have figured it out; the sophomore Green Manalishi S-New Years Day gelding had one victory in his first 15 career starts but has rattled off five in a row since June 8. The Kyle Fellows trainee has won five of eight starts this year, including his first Ontario Sires Stakes score in a Grassroots leg on June 25 at Mohawk. He is six-for-20 lifetime and has earned $90,015 for owner-breeder Ed Wilson of Seagrave, Ont. As the 3-2 favourite, he returned $5.
