Two-time O’Brien Award winner L A Delight continued to prep for her four-year-old campaign on Tuesday morning (July 11) at Mohawk Racetrack, as the Campbellville, Ont. oval played host to an eight-race qualifying session that also featured four dashes for two-year-olds.
The Bob McIntosh-trained Bettors Delight mare made her seasonal charted debut last week during a Mohawk qualifier, one in which she paced to a four and a quarter-length win in 1:54.2 with Randy Waples in the bike. Waples was in tow to L A Delight again on Tuesday and the duo lined up in Post 3 during Race 3.
L A Delight was fastest off the switch when the starting gate pulled away, and the career winner of 20 races and over $1.49-million in purses crossed over and got down to the quarter-mile marker in :27.3.
The bay continued to lead the field through the middle splits, as L A Delight towed the field past the half-mile indicator in :56 and beyond the three-quarters marker in 1:24.4.
Waples asked his charge for a bit more in the final panel, and the duo came home with a :27.4 quarter en route to a head victory in 1:52.3. The distinguished mare is a homebred of Robert McIntosh Stables Inc. (of Windsor, Ont.), CSX Stables (Liberty Center, OH) and Al McIntosh Holdings Inc. (Leamington, Ont.).
Two-year-olds comprised the next four races on the docket, and Mrs Dragonfire (1:57.3), Electro Pump (2:02.2), Evening Play (1:58.1) and Wanna Hall (1:58.4) each hit the wire first in their respective assignments.
