Teenagers from three states participated in the Harness Horse Youth Foundation’s leadership camp this past weekend at Historic Track in Goshen, New York. Eleven girls and two boys ages 13 through 17 honed their horsemanship skills and learned valuable leadership traits while having fun training and driving harness horses.
The camp was orchestrated by HHYF Executive Director Ellen Taylor and was funded by the Agriculture and New York State Horse Breeding Development Fund. Tim Gordon, executive director of 'The Fund' that administers the New York Sire Stakes, was on hand to observe the fledgling harness enthusiasts jog horses, clean and fit harness equipment, and get lessons in conformation and stable management.
Ironically, the seven harness horses utilized for the camp were stabled in the brand new 'Shed Row' barn. The 18-stall, open-air stable was recently unveiled at Historic Track with financial support from the 'N.Y. Fund.' The campers from Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York enjoyed three days in Goshen, while also spending time at the Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame learning about the prominent history of the All-American Standardbred.
