Driver Roland Rey swept both $7,474 MSSBA Futurity eliminations for three-year-old Manitoba-foaled pacers on Saturday at Glenboro Fair
with filly What A Rose for trainer and owner Arthur Rey and his own gelding Yoyo Pepere.
What A Rose overcame an outside Post 6 start in the first elimination and carved out stations of :30.1, 1:00.2 and 1:31.4 en route to victory in 2:02.2. The even-money favourite held off Notch Yer Best (Dean Rey) by a head while Heartland Friendha (Marc Fillion) finished one and a quarter length behind.
The sophomore daughter of Prince Brian-Countess P J, who finished second in her MSSBA Silk Lace division at Holland Fair last week, notched her second win in three lifetime starts.
Fresh off a MSSBA Golden Boy victory, Yoyo Pepere fought off favourite Alcars George (Marc Fillion) to win his elimination in 2:03.3.
The three-year-old son of Abbatom-Whacthewytch led the field through early fractions of :31.4 and 1:02.4 before Alcars George pulled the pocket and moved up alongside, sticking a nose in front at the 1:32.4 third quarter mark. Yoyo Pepere battled back and got his nose to the wire first for the win. It was eight and three-quarter lengths back to third-place finisher Donnies Deal (Darryl Mason).
The victory was Yoyo Pepere’s second in three lifetime starts.
