Sea Can won his first $11,000 Preferred 2 Trot on Monday (July 10) at Grand River Raceway, lowering the track record for aged gelding trotters to 1:55.1, a tick off the mark previously set by Sicario in 1:55.2.

Sea Can and Scott Young were the bettors' choice in the feature race, leaving from post two in the field of six. The pair got away fourth as Arrakis (Austin Sorrie) took charge of the field through the opening panel in :27.3. Young pulled his right line before the half in :56.4 to make a first-over advance. Treasured Tee (Travis Henry) followed his lead. By the three-quarters in 1:25.5, Sea Can had taken over second from the outside. He kept plugging along to take over the lead en route to a 1:55.1 score by a length. Kameran Hanover (Chris Christoforou) rallied down the stretch to take second and Treasured Tee finished third.

Mark Etsell trains Sea Can and co-owns the four-year-old Muscle Mass gelding with Terry Devos and Peter Porter. The win was his third in eight starts this season and ninth lifetime victory, moving his career bankroll to $213,837.
