Batterup Hanover was victorious in the top-class pacing event at Truro Raceway on the afternoon of June 9.
Carded as race eight of nine on the card, the Winners Over Handicap had a field of six vying for the winner's share of the $2,500 purse. The field included sub-1:50 pacer Wind Blown, making his seasonal debut and return to Truro Raceway.
When the gate wings closed, American Risk (Andy Campbell) left hard from post one with Batterup Hanover (Paul Langille) following out from post four, while race favourite Wind Blown (Pooker McCallum) settled away in sixth and last in the early going. American Risk laid down opening quarter time in a sharp :27.4, before slowing the pace to :57.4, with Batterup Hanover content sitting in the pocket while Wind Blown began his first-over journey from the back.
Turning into the backstretch, Batterup Hanover angled to the outside from second and began his charge at American Risk; the duo battled up the backstretch where they arrived at three-quarters in 1:27. Wind Blown was still yet to be heard from as he was stalled on the outside in third. Turning for home, Batterup Hanover opened up and drove off with a :27.3 last quarter to win by four lengths in 1:54.3. American Risk held on for second and Brumby (Robert Laffin) rolled up the inside to finish third, with Wind Blown finishing fourth.
A six-year-old gelded son of Betting Line, Batterup Hanover is owned by Debbie Francis, Roseanne Langille, Douglas Lowthers and Chantel Langille. Winning driver Paul Langille is also the conditioner. The victory was the 21st of the pacer’s career.
