On Wednesday (June 9), Chip Chip Conway handily dispatched a short field of five to win the $6,700 Open Trot at Monticello Raceway in 1:58.2.
Tax Savings was first away from the gate, followed by Cinnamon Stick and Chip Chip Conway. They were three-wide on the backstretch going to the quarter pole. Chip Chip Conway, who paid $3.60 to win, made the front and cut the fractions of :28.4, :58.1 and 1:28.1 to win by five lengths in 1:58.2. Finishing second was Sweet Royalty (Kyle DiBenedetto) and taking the show position was Raceace (Alan Schwartz).
It was the fifth win of the season for Chip Chip Conway, a son of Conway Hall owned by Ken Weckstein and trainer Gary Messenger.
Also on the card, in the Catskill Amateur Drivers Series, McKenzie Sowers won her first pari-mutuel race aboard Midnight Shark in 1:57.1. McKenzie is the 22-year-old daughter of leading Monticello Raceway trainer Bo Sowers.
The fastest mile of year also occurred on the card as Juniors Dew scored in 1:53.3 for driver Cory Stratton, trainer Ashley Eldred and owner Marianna Monaco.
Jim Taggart Jr. drove two winners on the afternoon.
