The Grand River Agricultural Society recently presented a donation cheque to bolster local community initiatives. The presentation took place at Grand River Raceway, which is owned and operated by GRAS.

On June 7, a donation of $500 was awarded to Waterloo Rural Women to build upon and improve their 21st annual Children’s Farm Safety Day 2016 taking place at Ontowa Farms in Elmira on Saturday, June 11. This is a one-day event and last year, 150 children were in attendance.

Community volunteers will be instructing the children on subjects such as farm machinery, large animal, and bicycle and electrical safety. The children are all sent home with items that they can use to remind them of the safety messages they learned during the event.

The mission of Waterloo Rural Women is to teach safety precautions and create and build awareness for families about the hazards that can occur on their farms. It is their hope to teach children safe habits that will protect them from serious injury, stating “These are our future farmers!”

The Grand River Agricultural Society is a not-for-profit corporation, incorporated under the Agricultural and Horticultural Societies Act of Ontario and governed by a volunteer board of directors reporting to OMAFRA.

The GRAS mandate is to encourage awareness of agriculture and to promote improvements in the quality of life of persons living in an agricultural community.
