Onyx V A made his first visit this year to Rideau Carleton Raceway's winner's circle on Sunday night after holding off favourite Poppys Bucky Boy in the $6,500 Winners Over Pace.
With horses stacked wide to his outside entering the stretch, Onyx V A zipped up the passing lane off a pocket trip behind eventual third-place finisher Zambuca Gass and held off a from-last Poppys Bucky Boy by half a length to win the top class in 1:54.3. Kyle Forgie drove the Electric Stena gelding, who is owned by trainer Andre Larocque and Violine Plante of Lourdes-De-Joliette, Que.
The victory was Onyx V A's second in his last three starts. He earned his first win of his eight-year-old campaign on May 18 at Hippodrome 3R. With 10 top three finishes in 12 starts this year, Onyx V A has banked $16,530 in purses.
Sent postward as the 7-1 sixth choice in the eight-horse field, Onyx V A returned $17.30 to his backers.
A couple races later, Bare Necessity (Guy Gagnon) and Gibsonontherocks (Sylvain Lacaille) were involved in an accident while racing mid-pack near the first quarter mark. Both Gagnon and Lacaille resumed driving in the following races.
