Two-year-old trotter Special Agent Man might, indeed, be special.
For the moment, he’s the fastest two-year-old trotter in the country, on the strength of a 2:02.1 victory achieved last Sunday at half-mile Hippodrome 3R on a track that was off because of morning rain.
It was his first start, after a 2:03.3 qualifier at the same track, and he came within two-fifths of a second of the track record for two-year-old trotting colts and geldings. Weather permitting, that record may fall Sunday when the Federal Flex colt makes his next start in the third race with trainer Claude Beausoleil in the sulky.
Then he’s off to Ontario to compete in Ontario Sires Stakes events and, if he’s good enough, the William Wellwood trot.
“I couldn’t ask for more. He’s really good...a machine,” said Quebec owner Michel Gaboury, who owns an elevator business called Ascenceurs Richelieu and races as Ecuries Richelieu.
Gaboury paid $1,500 for Special Agent Man at The 2012 Canadian Yearling Sale at Flamboro Downs. He also paid $1,500 for Mary Michelle, a pacing filly by Artistic Fella. Named for and owned by his 12-year-old daughter, the two-year-old filly qualified in 2:02 and will make her first start in Sunday’s second race at Hippodrome 3R.
As luck would have it, they’re the least expensive of the 30 horses he’s owned over the past 14 years, Gaboury said, and they also appear to be the best.
