Just five qualifiers were contested on what was a relatively quiet morning Monday, June 8 at Mohawk
Racetrack.
Trotters went behind the gate in the first qualifier, with Norwegian-owned Faux Fur Hanover, a three-year-old daughter of Muscles Yankee, emerging victorious over three other sophomores in a time of 2:00.1. Trainer Torgeir Hagmann was at the lines. The maiden filly made four starts as a two-year-old and delivered her first charted mile of the 2009 season in a qualifier on May 29, finishing second to Mystic River in 2:03.1.
Hide The Cash dominated a full field of pacers in the second contest, overtaking an off-stride Atomic Yankee in the stretch to stop the final timer in 1:54.4 for driver Steve Condren. The five-year-old son of Million Dollar Cam last made a pari-mutuel start in July 2008 at Georgian Downs. A veteran of 44 starts for trainer Fred Hoffman, he has had one previous tune-up this spring, pacing home second on June 1 in a clocking of 1:55.4.
The third qualifier was to have featured the sophomore debut of top two-year-old filly, West Of LA, but she did not end up contesting the event. Onherwaykillean went on to prevail by a neck over Have A Cigar for driver Mark MacDonald. She stopped the timers in 1:57.1. Casie Coleman trains the four-year-old daughter of The Panderosa, who has earned just shy of $100,000.
Only three trotters managed clean lines in the fourth qualifier of the session, with Filly Hotspur (driven by Chris Christoforou) in front by a neck at the wire over Hit The Mark (Rick Zeron) in 2:00.1. Kristopher Di Cenzo of Hamilton, Ont. trains and co-owns the five-year-old daughter of Valley Victor, who was claimed last November for $9,000.
In the final qualifier, a three-year-old pacing colt named Riverwalk, by Red River Hanover, got his gait together to deliver a solid victory, after having been distanced in three consecutive qualifiers at London’s Western Fair Raceway. With a bigger oval to enjoy, Riverwalk overtook pacesetter Bet On Him (Rick Zeron) at the half-mile marker and confidently held off all comers to win in 1:56 for pilot Sylvain Filion and owner/trainer Chad Milner of Denfield, Ont.
