Get Wings soared home off a first-over trip to take down a loaded $7,000 Preferred 1 Pace field on Saturday, June 6 at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Blood Money (Gilles Barrieau) cut fractions of :27.2, :56.1 and 1:24.3 with Get Wings on the overland trek for Marc Campbell through the back half. As they straightened for home, Get Wings produced a final surge to get past Blood Money and out-kick the pylon-shooting Bee Two Bee (Jason Hughes) by a neck for the 1:52.4 victory. Bee Two Bee was a narrow second over Blood Money.
The win for Get Wings came in his first start since touching down in Prince Edward Island from Ontario. Now trained by Vaughan Doyle, the four-year-old son of Bettors Wish-The Captains Angel is owned by Gary Ford of Stratford, P.E.I. and Janet Kinney of Wheatley River, P.E.I. He is now 12-for-41 lifetime with $171,315 in earnings. The win price was $13.70.
Marc Campbell had a trio of driving wins on the 13-race card. He won with Hunters Hero ($6.40) in a tight 11th-race photo in 1:55.4 for trainer Landon Campbell. The gelding held off Steamboat Springs (Adam Merner) by a nose for owner Brady Doyle of Stratford. Geishas Treasure ($2.50) was a dominant winner in the second race, wiring the field in 1:55.1 for a 6-1/2-length score for Campbell, owner Blaize Rogerson of Tracadie Cross, P.E.I. and trainer Brendon Mullen.
Barrieau made four trips to the winner’s circle on the evening to extend his meet-leading total at Charlottetown to 32 wins. Captainofrocknroll ($35.70) delivered the biggest upset of the evening in Race 10, rallying for Barrieau to win by two lengths in 1:55 for trainer Jennifer Doyle and co-owner Max Webster Stable of Inverness, N.S. Fast Louie ($6.80) captured the eighth race by a neck in 1:53.4 for Barrieau and trainer Jennifer Doyle, who shares ownership with Max Webster Stable and Ryan McLaughlin of Cornwall, P.E.I.
Woodmere Mahomes ($5.20) went all the way in the ninth race for trainer-driver Barrieau, stopping the clock in 1:56.4. The gelding won by 1-3/4 lengths for owner Daniel Ross of Vernon Bridge, P.E.I.. Rosiesmightymoe ($12.40) pulled off a mild upset in the third race for Barrieau, winning by a quarter-length in 1:55.3 for Melvin Gamester, who co-owns the gelding with Heather Gamester of North Wiltshire, P.E.I.
Total wager was $163,283 on the program. Live racing continues on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Red Shores Summerside.
