Longshot Played By Swan parlayed a perfect trip into a Thursday evening triumph in the $18,000 featured trot at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
With Doug McNair at the helm, Played By Swan grabbed a two-hole trip behind Sorceress Seelster, who rolled the field through hot panels of :27.2, :55.4 and 1:25.3. The leader tired and then rolled into a break as the field turned into the lane, and that left the door wide-open at that point.
Played By Swan used a :30-second closing quarter to prevail by a half-length margin over race favourite Highland Dynamite in 1:55.4. Graceful, who was in the hunt in the late stages of the mile, rallied to take home the show dough.
Ashley Duford trains the five-year-old son of Swan For All-Playoff Volo for Dennis Duford of Dresden, Ont. The gelding, who was 0-for-14 on the season going into Thursday’s tilt, is now a three-time winner in his career. The lion’s share of the purse bumped his bankroll to $143,672.
