Little Brown Jug winner and Canada's 2012 Horse of the Year Michaels Power recorded his first charted mile of the season during Mohawk Racetrack's qualifying session Wednesday morning.
The Casie Coleman-trained son of Camluck took to the Campbellville oval for the sixth race on the 12-dash docket.
After having started from Post 3 in the field of five, pilot Scott Zeron eased the winner of $1.48-million in purses back into fourth as 2011 Metro Stakes winner Simply Business (driven by Sylvain Filion) sliced the opening quarter in :27.3.
Michaels Power had moved up to third by the time Simply Business clicked off the :57.3 half-mile marker and remained in the same spot as the tempo-setter passed the three-quarters of a mile marker in 1:26.4.
After having trailed by more than six lengths at the three quarters, Zeron asked his mount for some closing speed. Michaels Power responded by kicking home with a 26-second final quarter, but it was not enough to reel in Filion and Simply Business, who completed the wire-to-wire victory.
Simply Business' win time was 1:53.4 and the final margin of victory was one length. Michaels Power was individually timed in 1:54.
