Hanover Raceway's 2017 harness racing season began on Saturday evening (June 3) with nine-year-old pacer Sandys Candy and driver Paul Davies making the first visit to the winner's circle.
Sandys Candy overtook the popular race leader Twin B Brat at the third quarter mark and won the season opener by two lengths in 1:59.3 for trainer/owner Kyle Bossence. The Life Sign gelding paid $5.80 to win as the second wagering choice. Bluejean Jaba came on for second while Twin B Brat finished back in third.
Homer Martin's homebred pacer Flames Cammi Boy pulled off the biggest upset of the night mid-card, holding off favourite Another Great Pick to win by a head in 1:59. The 10-year-old son of Cammibest was the longest shot on the board at odds of 15-1 and paid $32.70 to win. Thomas Smith guided him to victory lane for trainer Jayne Walker.
Bruce Richardson jumped out to an early lead in the driver standings as he won the final four races on the program with Lyons King ($3.20), Avuncular ($14.90), and Jim Watt trainees Lady Richmond ($6.20) and Imnotamirage ($20.70).
On the training side, Larry Walker joined Watts with back-to-back winners on the card courtesy of Jayport Buddy ($5.70) and Sass That Mass ($9.10).
