Vernon Downs' Friday qualifiers included the track's very first two-year-old starter of the 2010 season

.

Dapper Denzil, a son of Red River Hanover, faced a field of older horses in his career debut for owner/trainer Arnie Marks.

Arnie's son, Josh Marks -- Vernon's leading driver for the current meet -- was at the controls of the freshman bay.

Reserved in fourth, nearly 10 lengths off the opening half (:57.4), Dapper Denzil was moved a measured first-over and ended up finishing second, just a length and a half short of the winner, Speculative Edge, a three-year-old Bettors Delight colt.

Speculative Edge, a New York Sire Stakes performer that was making his sophomore debut for trainer Dan Daley, paced his mile in 1:56.1. Dapper Denzil paced in 1:56.2.
