The first 2022 two-year-old winner for Canadian harness racing has emerged from the Friday (June 3) session of qualifiers at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
In the morning's fifth dash, two-year-old pacing colt Laz turned heads with an impressive performance against older competition. The only freshman in the group, Laz was settled away in third safely at the pylons by driver Doug McNair after avoiding the opening turn shadows. Raise The Rent (Jody Jamieson) fronted the field through a :28.3 opening quarter and :57.4 half. McNair then right-lined Laz around the five-eighths mark and started a first-over bid heading to the third station.
Five lengths off the leader at the 1:27.2 third quarter, Laz quickly brushed to the lead around the final turn and opened up a three-length advantage at the top of the stretch. Pacing home in :27.3, Laz was more than six lengths the best with the mile timed in 1:56. Jmm Hanover (Paul MacDonell) and Speaktoyourmanager (Bob McClure) completed the top trio.
Sold as Fox Valley Theo, Laz (Lazarus N - Shes Da Bomb) was a $20,000 Land Of Lincoln Yearling Sale purchase now owned by Aaron Waxman of Carlisle and Frank Cirillo of Kleinburg, Ont. Duane Marfisi handles the training.
