Y A Muscle Mass found the Preferred 2 class a bit too tough two starts ago, but the return to the Preferred 3 class on Friday evening at Grand River Raceway proved to be a better spot for the Isabelle Darveau trainee.
With Robert Shepherd at the lines, Y A Muscle Mass got away fourth in the $8,500 affair before making a first-over bid against Ramas Last Son. That foe carved out panels of :28.3, :59.2 and 1:28.2, but he couldn’t fend off Y A Muscle Mass in the late stages of the mile. Y A Muscle Mass kicked home in :30.1 to win by a length over Sicario in 1:58.3. Ramas Last Son faded to finish third.
Sent off as the 2-1 favourite, the four-year-old son of Muscle Mass-Jailhouse Jodi improved his 2019 record to 7-3-4 from 19 starts with the victory. The 11-time winner has banked more than $63,000 to date for owner Rosaire Renaud of Mirabel, QC.
