Marielle Enberg put the pedal to the metal with Azucar in his RUS debut Friday evening at Grand River Raceway, and the gelding didn’t look back en route to a 2:02.2 victory.
Azucar was hustled out quickly from the pole position, and the six-year-old son of Crazed-Lindy Loves Candy established the lead and carved out panels of :31.3, 1:02.4 and 1:32.3 before kicking home in :29.4 to fend off All Out Henry by a half-length margin. Amityville Lindy was a distant third in the $5,000 event.
Enberg shares ownership on Azucar with the gelding’s trainer, Martin Lachance. It was the third win of the season – and the 19th to date – for the career winner of $159,874.
