If Only Id Known and driver Phil Giesbrecht closed from mid-pack for a 16-1 upset in the $25,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace on Friday, June 28 at Century Downs.
Trained and co-owned by Chris Lancaster, the six-year-old Shadow Play-Michelles Fury mare followed along in fourth through contested opening fractions of :27.3 and :55 with three-quarters going in 1:23.4 before she kicked home in :28.3 to score the 1:53.1 victory. A $2 win ticket on If Only Id Known paid $35.80.
Stash The Cookies (Brandon Campbell) was denied a fourth straight win in the Preferred, finishing fourth after leading past the quarter pole. Early leader Grey Sea (Tyler Redwood) re-emerged from the pocket off the turn and was the runner-up, finishing 1-1/4 lengths behind If Only Id Known, with Outlaw Sharktastic (Nathan Sobey) getting third.
If Only Id Known now sports a seasonal record reading 3-3-7 from 16 starts with earnings just shy of the $50,000 mark for Lancaster and co-owner Velda Olding of Abbotsford, B.C. Lifetime, she has won 19 races and more than a quarter-million dollars in purses.
In other action, Outlaw Spiced Rum ($4.10) extended her current win streak to five in a row, with a 1:54.2 career-best effort in an $11,000 fillies and mares claiming/conditioned pace.
Mike Hennessy drove the six-year-old Blue Burner-Billie J Blue Chip mare, who battled back against the pocket-popping favourite Over Ice (Brandon Campbell) at the third quarter mark and finished 1-1/4 lengths clear of the quick-closing Roulette Hanover (Giesbrecht) to win for trainer Travis Ellis and Manitoba owners Trevor Williams and Aurel Vodon.
From 19 starts this season, Outlaw Spiced Rum has won a dozen, making her the winningest mare in Canada so far this year.
