After the first four winners in first-round Mark Austin Memorial Pacing Series action all paid under $5 to win, Mached Up ($72.70) sprang a major upset to cap Sunday afternoon's (June 28) slate of featured events at Dresden Raceway.
In line to Garrett Rooney, the three-year-old son of Mach Three sustained a first-over attack into a slowing pace set by even-money favourite Frownies Miracle (Tyler Borth). After Frownies Miracle reached three-quarters in 1:30.3, Mached Up found his best strides on the far turn, closing ground steadily, collaring the longtime pacesetter in deep stretch, and prevailing by a length in 2:02 for owner Antonia Smith and trainer Darell Vleeming.
The speed badge in Austin action went to Dreaming Out Loud ($2.20), whose 1:58.1 mile in the fourth $5,000 division took top honours on the day. Tyler Borth moved the son of Thinking Out Loud to the point just beyond a :29.2 quarter and started to edge clear of Nancys Girl (Marc St. Louis Jr.) and five other foes beyond a :58.3 half. Through the final turn, Dreaming Out Loud drew off in earnest, ultimately besting the late closing tandem of Addi Three And Macharita by 14-3/4 lengths.
Trainer Keith Cullen shares ownership of the undefeated Dreaming Out Loud, who is now a perfect four-for-four, with Chris Cain.
Acefortyfour Dome ($2.60, Nick Boyd, 1:58.3), Livin Ona Dream ($4.70, Borth, 2:01.3) and Zeke The Freak ($4.50, St. Louis, 2:02) captured the remaining Austin divisions.
