Canbec Fridolin was treated to a ground-saving trip in Tuesday’s $35,000 Preferred Trot at Mohawk Racetrack, and in return the gelding treated his backers to a
23-1 upset when he scored in 1:55.3.
Sylvain Filion mapped out the winning trip for Canbec Fridolin, who sat sixth on the rail for most of the mile while All Cantab supplied the group with fractions of :27.2, :57 and 1:25.1. Kashs Caviar applied first-over pressure on the leader around the final turn, but his bid was a brief one. All Cantab looked like he might kick away in the late going, but a pair of challengers started impressive rallies from the backfield.
Canbec Fridolin angled off the rail turning for home and started a good-looking rally while Triumphant Caviar was doing the same after kicking off cover coming into the stretch. Both trotters had good speed to offer on the end of the mile, but Canbec Fridolin was just a bit better and posted the half-length score over Triumphant Caviar. Tempo-setter All Cantab faded to finish third.
Richard Moreau conditions the six-year-old son of Cherry Hills-La Coquette for the partnership of Tourmana Inc and Claude Hamel of Quebec along with Lapharmaciedekedgwick Inc of New Brunswick. The victory was the gelding’s fifth of the season and the 22nd of his career. The lion’s share of the purse pushed his bankroll over $300,000.
