Sugar Scoot Brown took the Fillies & Mares Open Pace at Scioto Downs on Friday night in one of the most exciting races of the season
.
Sent off at 14-1 odds, Sugar Scoot Brown tracked down pacesetting Tu Tu Twain and favoured Cruzin Inya Jammys to win by two lengths in 1:54.4. The next eight pacers--the remainder of the field--were separated only by 2-1/2 lengths.
Yndra Hanover (11-1) got up for second while Lookin Ata Sadie (15-1) took third money in a tight photo.
Sugar Scoot Brown paid $29.80 to win while the trifecta paid $1,000.65
Russell Swartz drove the winner for owner-trainer Joshua Cochran and the four-year-old tripped the timer in 1:54.4.
Jeff Nisonger sent the 6-1 shot Tu Tu Twain to the front from Post 8 and set fast fractions, but was overwhelmed by the onrushing tide in the homestretch. Swartz had Sugar Scoot Brown forwardly placed throughout the mile and she had the most pace when the mares turned for home.
Hello Carlo took the Open Trot in 1:56.2 at Scioto on Friday over Giulio and Gran Mandell. The son of Carry The Message took control in the final half-mile and eased to the wire two lengths ahead of his pursuers. Mario Caponi owns Hello Carlo.
