The trip was perfect and the end result was impressive for rookie trotter Shouldaknownbetter in Thursday evening’s pari-mutuel debut at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

The Ohio-bred son of Deep Chip-Lexis Electra turned a two-hole trip into a 1:57 triumph in a $15,000 event for two-year-old trotters at the Campbellville, Ont. oval.

In rein to Louis Philippe Roy, Shouldaknownbetter battled with race favourite Black Tie Bash to the quarter pole in :29.3 before releasing that foe to the front. Black Tie Bash rolled the field through middle splits of :58.3 and 1:28.3, but he couldn’t seal the deal.

Roy tipped off the leader’s back in the lane and Shouldaknownbetter stormed home in :28 to win by four lengths over Black Tie Bash in 1:57. Taking home the show dough was Lifelong Wish.

Sent off at odds of 11-1, the son of Deep Chip-Lexis Electra won at first asking for owner/trainer Shane Arsenault of Freelton, Ont.
