Shell I Attack launched her attack out of the starting gate and defended her lead all the way to the wire to win Scioto’s Fillies & Mares Open Pace on Friday night
.
J.D. Wengerd piloted the six-year-old bay mare to victory for owner and trainer Jim Kiesel of Litchfield, Ohio. It was Shell I Attack’s third win in nine starts this season and she matched her lifetime mark by clocking a 1:54.2 mile.
Shell I Attack has been competitive with the best female pacers at Scioto in the past month, but she was unable to find the winner’s circle since moving up to the Fillies & Mares. She was sent off at odds of 6-1 while the bettors made TTs Little Lass the even money favourite.
Shell I Attack always leaves alertly and she showed the way through the opening stages of the race with Whats The Hurry behind her and CR Hope parked on the outside. TTs Little Lass trailed in the field of six. The overland journey took a toll of CR Hope in the stretch but driver Jeff Nisonger had TTs Little Lass full of pace. She had too much ground to make up as Shell I Attack scored by 3-3/4 lengths. CR Hope held for third.
Shell I Attack paid $13,80 to win and pushed her career earnings past $172,000 with the victory.
