After having been sent away as the co-longest shot on the tote board on Sunday (June 24) at Inverness Raceway, the James Copley-trained and Alex MacQuarrie-driven Shanghai B G got the last laugh in the $1,150 Winners Over Pace.
MacQuarrie and Shanghai B G were sent away at odds of 4-1 from the rail, and the duo scooted out to the early lead before passing the quarter-mile marker in :30.1.
Racing over a ‘good’ track rated one second slow, the 11-year-old Shanghai Phil gelding was able to pace a manageable middle half, which saw the respective fractions flash to life in 1:01.1 and 1:31.3.
It proved to be game over from there, as Shanghai B G paced home with a :29.3 final quarter en route to a one-length victory in 2:01.1.
The Ryan Campbell-driven Doubleshotascotch, who raced second through the mile, finished in the place spot. John MacDonald raced his mount, Bonnys Mac, overland during the back half of the mile and ended up finishing third, six and a half lengths in arrears of the victor.
Shanghai B G returned $11.70 on a successful $2 Win wager.
The mile marked the first win of 2018 for Shanghai B G, who is owned by Inverness residents Ann Copley, Evan Gillis and James Copley.
The victory was No. 44 of Shanghai B G’s 183-race career.
He has now banked more than $189,000 in career purse earnings.
