The betting public barely had Bearcat Josi on its radar in Monday’s $9,000 Fillies & Mares Open at Century Downs, and the mare was clearly offended by the pari-mutuel snub.
She got away slowly, but finished quickly en route to sweeping to a 50-1 stunner in the featured affair.
Phil Giesbrecht got away seventh with the five-year-old daughter of Blue Burner-Barona Josie while You Talk Too Much shot to the lead and wheeled the field through fractions of :27,3 and :57.4. Sell A Bit N applied first over pressure on the leader on the way to the half, and she worked her way to the top while racing parked past the three-quarter pole in 1:26.
Bearcat Josi, who was seventh through the opening half of the contest, got into the flow and moved up to sixth at the three-quarter pole. A :29.3 closing quarter was enough for Bearcat Josi to sweep to the top and win by a half-length margin over Sell A Bit N in 1:56.2. The even-money favourite, Cusdmagicdragon, took home third prize in the nine-mare affair.
Derek Stout of Camrose, AB owns and trains the eight-time winner who won for the first time this season. The $4,500 payday pushed her lifetime earnings to $168,344.
