The Saugeen Claiming Series continued for the fillies and mares carrying a $12,000 price tag on Wednesday night at Hanover Raceway
with three $8,400 second leg divisions.
Angels First Cammi went wire-to-wire to win the first division by three lengths in 1:58.1 from driver Thomas Smith and trainer Jayne Walker. The five-year-old Cammibest-Hidden Angel mare, owned and bred by Homer Martin of Elmira, Ont., was followed by Mischievous Luck (Bruce Richardson) and Ajs Rocknrolltrain (Trevor Henry) in second and third while favourite Dreamfair Alexis (Ryan Holliday) rounded out the field after making a break. The win was her first of the season in 13 tries.
Lexis Mandy wired the six-horse second division, pulling off a 14-1 upset. The four-year-old Oye Vay-Emer Indy mare, owned, trained and driven by James Tropea, clocked the mile in a career-best 2:00.1 over the track downgraded to ‘good’ with a one and a quarter length margin of victory. Legendary (Ross Battin) and Pindars Grin (Mark Etsell) finished second and third. The win was her third in 17 outings this year and 42 career starts.
Modern Star wore down heavy favourite Wicked Fast (Bruce Richardson) in the final division, winning by a quarter length in 1:59.1 at odds of 9-1. Travis Henry drove the four-year-old Modern Art-Miss Cam Starmare to victory for trainer Dan Morrissey and owners David and Leona Morrissey of Ailsa Craig, Ont. Pocket-sitter Midwest Terror (Mark Etsell) finished a half length back in third. The first leg runner-up has won five times in 17 seasonal starts.
