After rescheduling due to soggy conditions this past weekend, the 14-race slate of two-year-old qualifying races went postward under pristine conditions
at Mohawk Racetrack in Campbellville, Ont.
With Mike Saftic in the bike for trainer Rheal Bourgeois, Western Maverick colt Mavericky, out of the Artsplace mare Secretarial Art, converted a second-over trip in Race 1. Mavericky's cover broke stride at the head of the lane, but the colt drove on to a two and a half-length victory in 1:59.3. His final quarter-mile was clocked in :27.4.
Race 2 saw brown Ken Warkentin colt Kenny B go gate-to-wire from Post 7. Driven by Kelvin Rose for conditioner Carmen Auciello, the colt, out of the Worthy Bowl mare Kawartha An Worthy, was solid throughout the mile, eventually posting a five and a quarter-length victory in 2:02.1.
Bettors Delight colt SNP Bluechip turned a three-hole trip into a head victory in Race 3, putting in a 1:59 mile for driver Randy Waples and trainer James 'Friday' Dean. The bay is out of the Artsplace mare Advantest.
The trotting fillies came out to play during Race 4, and with trainer Carl Jamieson in the bike, Baileys Breeze put in a wire-to-wire victory from Post 4. After having held a five-length lead through much of the back half, the Angus Hall bay stopped the clock two and a half lengths the best in the 2:01.2 mile. The filly is out of the Balanced Image mare Balanced Breeze.
After having started from Post 8, Striking Sahbra colt Protégé Seelster put in a decisive second-quarter move en route to victory in Race 5. After being charted seven and a half lengths off the leader at the first call, the bay had the lead by the opening half mile and would go on to post a two and a quarter-length win in 2:01.1. Trainer Fred Jamieson was in the bike. Protégé Seelster is out of the Mr Lavec daughter Pepi Lavec.
Western Terror filly Western Dancing dug her toes in for pilot Paul MacDonell and conditioner Jim Ainsworth during Race 6. The filly, out of the Cambest mare Cam Dancing, left from Post 8 and put in a wire-to-wire mile, hitting the finish line in 1:58.1, three and three quarter lengths the best.
Carl Jamieson hit the finish line first in Race 7 with Ken Warkentin colt Boogie Woogie. The bay, out of the Super Pleasure mare Dixieland Jazz, made every pole a winning one, eventually putting up a three and a quarter-length margin of victory in 2:01.2.
With Luc Ouellette in the bike for trainer Michel Ouellet, Western Hanover filly Chocolate Truffle battled in Race 8 and posted a half-length victory in 2:00. The filly is out of the Legal Notice mare Little Black Book.
Trainer Fred Jamieson was again victorious with one of his students in Race 9, as Kadabra colt Ja El Express recorded a 10-length victory in 2:01. The colt is out of the Sierra Kosmos mare Keystone Bluejay.
McMaverick overcame a Post 9 starting spot in Race 10 to post an open-length victory for driver Steve Condren and trainer Bob McIntosh. After going first-up from third on the final turn, the Western Maverick colt drew off and recorded a three and a half-length victory in 1:57.4. The colt is out of the Artsplace mare Six Of Arts.
Having sat a pocket trip in Race 11, Credit Winner filly Streak did just that in the lane, trotting off to a two-length win in 2:02.1 for trainer Torgeir Hagmann. The filly is out of the millionaire Muscles Yankee mare Blur.
After starting from the rail in Race 12, Real Desire filly Hidden Gem converted a three-hole trip into a nose victory in 2:00.2. The duo of Luc Ouellette and Michel Ouellet clicked in the race with the filly, which is out of the Tough Hombre mare Hombres Girl.
Also leaving from Post 1, and also converting a three-hole trip, Striking Sahbra filly Sooner Than Later stopped the clock in 2:04.2 in Race 13. Trevor Ritchie performed the driving duties for trainer Bob McIntosh. The margin of victory was one length. Sooner Than Later is out of the Balanced Image mare New Image Soon.
The familiar duo of Condren and McIntosh clicked during the last race of the card with Camluck colt Cool And Collected. Having left from Post 8, the colt would go on to post a half-length victory in 1:59.3. Cool And Collected is out of the Artsplace mare Lartesienne.
