Smart Shark extended his Open level win streak to four using his well-known come from behind tactics in the $11,000 feature on Saturday afternoon at Grande Prairie
.
With trainer and part-owner Connie Kolthammer at the lines, the five-year-old Cams Card Shark ridgling got away fifth from the outside post as the fan favourite, Neal Diamonique (Keith Clark), shot off the gate from the four-hole and established the early lead. Neal Diamonique led the field past the first quarter in :27.2 and half in :56.4 while Smart Shark moved to the outside and began to make steady progress flushing Timberline Court (Gerry Hudon) out from third. That one reached up for the lead at three-quarters in 1:25.3, but as the field turned for home Smart Shark kicked into action and used a :29.2 final frame to come on for the win in 1:55.1.
Timberline Court stayed for second finishing a length and three-quarters back, and Weekend Bernie (Rod Hennessy) was third.
Smark Shark began his win streak at Alberto Downs posting a 1:51.3 track record mile on May 2, which made Kolthammer the fastest female driver in Canada. So far this season, he has put together a record reading 6-2-1 in 12 starts earning $31,951. Purchased at the Harrisburg sale as a two-year-old for $25,000, Smark Shark has won 11 times in his career earning $87,781 for the Outlaw Stable of Falun, Alta.
