Following a narrow defeat last week, Charles and Gordon Lawrence's Boadicea ($4.90) unleashed a powerful head-stretch kick and proved a 1:50.4 winner in Friday night's (June 19) $32,000 Fillies and Mares Preferred Handicap Pace at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Boadicea and driver Sylvain Filion were widest of three leavers in the seven-mare field, and the pair had to work to clear Kendall Seelster (Robert Shepherd) and Kloof Street (Bob McClure) through a :26.4 first quarter. After achieving the top on the first turn, Boadicea managed a :29.2 second-quarter breather, only to be tested on the far turn by Sly Eleanor N (Jody Jamieson), who emerged from fourth to apply first-over pressure to three-quarters in 1:24.
Boadicea shook away off the home turn and powered to a 2-3/4 length lead at the eighth pole. That — and a :26.4 closing split — proved enough of a jump to stave off the hard-closing pair of Kendall Seelster and So Much More (James MacDonald) by 1-1/4 lengths.
Bill Budd trains 13-time winner Boadicea, a four-year-old daughter of Big Jim who is closing in aggressively on $500,000 in career earnings.
