Cash Advance, Sweet Cheeseus Take Austin Finals

Families packed the grandstand for Father’s Day at Dresden Raceway on Sunday (June 18) with two Mark Austin Memorial Pacing Series finales and two Preferred 3 classes headlining the card.

In the $15,100 Mark Austin Memorial Pacing Series final for horses and geldings, Cash Advance (Nick Steward) set the tempo through panels in :28.3, 1:01 and 1:31.3 en route to a one-length victory in 2:00.4. Teen Tattler (Garrett Rooney) finished second and Better Off Single (Don Rankin) was third.

Mike Timpano trains the three-year-old son of Artspeak for J P Simser, Dennis Nye and Eric Walstrom. 

In the $14,800 series finale for the fillies and mares, Garrett Rooney maneuvered Sweet Cheeseus from fifth at the quarter in :29.1 to a second-over trip following the cover of Hello Life (Damian MacLellan) through the half in :58.4. By the three-quarters in 1:29, Sweet Cheeseus claimed the top spot real estate, continuing through to a 1-1/2-length victory in 1:59.2. Rose Ricky (Andy Moore) was second and Danica Seelster (Scott Wray) finished third.

Sweet Cheeseus, a four-year-old daughter of Betterthancheddar, is trained by Kathryn Cochrane for owner Steven Besterd.

Ranger Rob went gate-to-wire to win the $5,000 Preferred 3 Trot by seven lengths in 2:00.3. Dan Clements was in the bike for trainer Steven McQueen and the partnership of Louie Sorella, Stewart McQueen, Donald MacLellan and James Grant. Duke Deo (Anthony Hamlin) was second and Muscle Up The Gold (Robert Doyle) rounded out the triactor.

In the second $5,000 Preferred 3 class for pacers, Crankys Boy also took a gate-to-wire approach, winning by 1-1/4 lengths in 1:58.3. Andy Moore steered the seven-year-old gelding owned and trained by Rick Edwards to victory. Kenny Joe (Dan Clements) was second and Slick N Sporty (Scott Wray) finished third.

The total handle for the card was $55,674. Live harness racing at Dresden Raceway returns on Sunday, June 25 with a first post at 1 p.m.
