Zorgwijk Fortunate turned in a wire-to-wire winning effort in the Wednesday night feature at Sudbury Downs
, the $11,000 Not Listed Preferred Trot.
With Richard Baker handling the driving duties, the seven-year-old Wesgate Crown gelded returned to the Chelmsford half-mile oval for the first time this year leaving from the assigned post No. 7. Zorgwijk Fortunate led the field to the quarter-pole in :29 before the favoured Aforgottendynasty (Darryl Munro) advanced from fourth and applied pressure past the half in :59.1. After shaking off the challenge, Zorgwijk Fortunate rolled past three-quarters in 1:28.3. The David Jim King pupil then coasted home for the 6-1 upset in 1:58.3.
Lisas Encore (Pat Rouleau) rode the pocket to finish a length back in second while Suzys Solitaire (Allan Hohner) came on for third.
Owned by Mario Delgobbo of Maple, Ont., Zorgwijk Fortunate has recorded six wins in 17 starts this year good for over $42,000 in purses. A winner of 23 races lifetime, the bay is closing in on the $300,000 mark in career earnings.
Local trainer France Maclean tripled up on the 12-race card with Laag Arita (2:00, Race 3), Deuces And Jacks (1:54.3, Race 5) and Twin B Mystery (1:59.4, Race 9) winning their respective assignments with Paul Maclean in the bike. France has won 15 races this season and 273 in his career with $1.4 million in earnings.
