Zip The Lip Pockets Summerside Open

Zip The Lip made the most of the rain soaked oval Sunday afternoon at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway winning the $1,850 Open Trot.

Driven by Brian MacPhee, Zip The Lip left from post five and sat the pocket behind post time favourite Abundaspin (Harold Shepherd) through fractions of :30.3, 1:02.3 and 1:34 before getting up in the stretch for a 2:04.4 decision on a track rated three seconds off. Abundaspin was second with Presto Pegasus (Mark Bradley) finishing third.

Zip The Lip paid $8.40 to win, while the 5-1-3 winning triactor paid $115.70.

Zip The Lip is co-owned and trained by Don Sweet and co-owned by Orville Willis, both of O’Leary, P.E.I.

Race two on the afternoon had one of the biggest winning payouts in Island racing history when Bringhome Theblue tipped four-wide up the backstretch to win in 2:04.4 for driver Gilles Barrieau, trainer Blaine McKenna and owner William Andrew of Calgary. The Badlands Hanover gelding paid $262.60 on a $2 win ticket, while the exactor, triactor and superfecta wagers were all paid out at 5-all due to no winning tickets being sold.

Eagle Jolt captured the $1,900 feature pace in 1:59 for trainer/driver Marc Campbell and owners Wilbur and Marie MacDonald of Orwell, P.E.I. Ultimate Luck (Kenny Arsenault) was second with Onehotvett (Barrieau) third.

Gary Chappell scored a driving triple on the card, while driving doubles went to Bradley and Campbell and a training double to conditioner Alan Taylor.
