The betting public was banking on Zig Zag to deliver in Monday’s $34,000 Preferred Handicap for trotters at Woodbine Mohawk Park, but when the dust settled it was Treasured Tee turning a two-hole trip into a 5-1 mild upset.
In rein to driver Doug McNair, Treasured Tee was treated to a pocket trip behind Zig Zag, as that foe carved out fractions of :27.1 and :56.1 before being confronted around the final turn by the pocket-popping Treasured Tee.
Those two battled to the three-quarter pole in 1:24.2 before Treasured Tee started to draw clear. He used a :28.4 closing panel to score by 3-1/2 lengths over Dream Nation in 1:53.1. Perfetto tracked cover and wound up third, with Zig Zag tiring in the lane and settling for fourth.
Richard Moreau trains the six-year-old son of Yankee Glide-Platinum T for owner Brad Grant of Milton, ON. The win was his third of the season and the 13th of his career. The $17,000 payday bumped his career earnings well over $200,000.
The win with Treasured Tee was part of a very strong finish to the Monday evening program by McNair. He also captured the two previous races with Southwind Avenger and Jimmy Connor B and then went on to capture the finale with Memo. It was a natural Grand Slam for McNair.
