We Want Eazy looked the part of a star as the two-year-old pacing colt handily delivered the fastest winning time during the baby race session on Friday, June 12 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
To borrow a line from 'We Want Eazy', a song by the late hip-hop legend Eazy E, rookie pacer We Want Eazy showed signs of being "a miracle of modern creation" for owner-trainer Blake MacIntosh. The son of Perfect Sting - Passion Hanover — making the dam a three-quarter sister to the dam of O'Brien Award winner and double millionaire Nijinsky — made his second appearance of the season after an unstressed off-the-pace test eight days ago. This time around, driver Tyler Borth had We Want Eazy on centre stage and in control of the beat through every call. Leaving from post three, We Want Eazy paced out panels of :30, :58.4 and 1:26.4 before strutting home in :29.4 for a shut-down 1:56.3 performance. Pownalbay Jimbob (Daryl Thiessen) finished second, 13 lengths back, with The Good Moment (Louis-Philippe Roy) rounding out the top trio.
The first foal of Passion Hanover, We Want Eazy was a $28,169 Harrisburg yearling bred by Princeton Acres Inc. of Princeton, Ont.
The fastest trotting mile of the morning's session came in the first trotting mile of the day when R Northern Star made every call a winning one for Team McNair. Driver Doug McNair sent the Gregg McNair student to the top from post five, forged through fractions of :30.4, 1:02 and 1:31.4 before closing in :29.2 to fend of a late bid from Mahalo (Trevor Henry) in a 2:01.1 effort. Mahalo finished second by three parts of a length with Mister Royale BG (Borth) a distant third.
A debuting homebred of Tom & Elizabeth Rankin of St. Catharines, Ont., R Northern Star is from the first crop of King Of The North and out of longtime Rankin-owned campaigner Royal Witch.
