Circling to the lead past the quarter, Wheels On Fire showed no doubts in cruising to a 1:51.2 victory as the 2-5 favourite in the $34,000 Preferred Pace on Saturday (June 12).
Real Surreal shot to the lead to a :27.3 first quarter with Wheels On Fire landing in second and Hail Christian N in third. Driver Doug McNair then vacated the pocket with the Richard Moreau trainee and cleared command before a :56.4 half. Taking the field by three-quarters in 1:24.4, Wheels On Fire coasted through the stretch while chased by Hail Christian N to win by a length with Real Surreal settling for third.
A six-year-old gelding by Somebeachsomewhere, Wheels On Fire won his sixth race from nine starts this season and his 28th from 77 overall, earning $482,523. Brad Grant owns the $2.60 winner.
Trainer Carmen Auciello scored a hat trick on the card with his pupils Uhtred ($8.80), Hes Swift ($97.20) and Undrthesouthrnsun N ($2.70) all visiting the winner’s circle.
