Down Under Mare Digs Mohawk

Woodbine Mohawk Park hosted a seven-race qualifying session on Tuesday morning (June 11), and a recent import from Down Under showed no ill effects from the move in what was her first charted performance over a North American racecourse.

The import in question, Better Be Donna N, took to the ‘fast’ track for Race 2 and lined up in Post 1 with driver Jonathan Drury.

Drury and the Betterthancheddar mare left the gate well and wanted the lead early. The duo raced overland along the first turn and cleared to the engine after the :30.1 quarter pole.

Drury and Better Be Donna N had it all their way from there on out. The pair sliced the middle fractions in :59.3 and 1:29.1 and paced home with a :27.4 final quarter. The win time was 1:57 and the margin of victory was one and three-quarter lengths.

Better Be Donna N, who is prepping for her five-year-old campaign, was purchased by Stephen Klunowski (of North York, Ont.) in April. The mare’s chart shows that she’s won eight of 21 races over the course of her career and has hit the board 14 times.
