Fresh off a commanding wire-to-wire victory in last week’s second leg of the Newcomers Series for Illinois conceived and foaled pacers, Cathy Finn-Kanitz’s good looking three-year-old General Mack made it two in a row as he led from start to finish in Friday’s $15,000 Newcomers Series Final
, winning by a six and three-quarter lengths in a career best of 1:55.4 at Maywood Park.
Driven as though defeat was out of the question by Lance Scurlock, the gelded son of Armbro Mackinotsh stormed to the front from post position five. In complete control of the proceedings, General Mack rolled through splits of :27.4, :57.3 and 1:26.1 while his rivals tried their best to keep the speedy gelding in view.
The issue was never in doubt when Fox Valley Fresco (Jamaica Patton), who had been sitting in fourth throughout, pulled heading into the far turn and went absolutely nowhere. That wound up backing up the entire outer flow giving Scurlock and General Mack a chance to scamper away from the pocket-sitting Got No Credit (Marcus Miller) on the turn.
With victory in sight, the Lyle Scurlock trainee rattled off a :28.4 final quarter to notch his second win in 10 career starts. Got No Credit finished second while Dry Creek Striker (John DeLong) was a distant third.
Sent off as the second choice in a wide open race for the bettor’s General Mack returned $9.60, $7.40 and $6.20 while moving his career earnings up to $12,630.
