New York Sire Stakes graduate Shes A Streaker tuned up for a potential older stakes campaign with a sharp qualifying victory during the Monday, June 1 morning session at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Shes A Streaker, who is eligible to this summer's Milton Stakes, built up a 10-length lead through panels of :28, :56.4 and 1:24.3 in the fourth qualifier and paced home in :27.3 to clock the fastest mile of the morning in 1:52.1 with Mark MacDonald in the sulky. Holy Jalapeno (Jody Jamieson) followed more than seven lengths behind and won the race for place over Shanes Dream (Jonathan Drury).
Seamus Quill trains the Huntsville-Mikayla Rose mare, who was purchased after her sophomore season by W. J. Donovan of Delray Beach, Florida for $105,634 at last fall's Standardbred Horse Mixed Sale in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Shes A Streaker had earned $431,197 in stakes competition stateside at ages two and three with a record reading 5-5-8 from 26 starts and took a mark of 1:50 at Vernon Downs while trained by Ron Burke.
The fastest trotting mile of the eight-race qualifying session came from Raising Rusty, who toured the Mohawk oval in :27.3, :57.3 and 1:26.2 en route to a 1:54.4 score in the opener for trainer/driver Stephane Pouliot. Seismic Step (Doug McNair) followed 2-1/4 lengths behind in his Canadian debut for the Tony Montini stable while Final Text (Scott Young) finished back in third.
A nine-year-old gelded son of Kadabra and Raising The Bar, Raising Rusty was a winner at Flamboro Downs last month and a five-time Preferred winner at Rideau Carleton Raceway last year. Lifetime, he was won 33 races and nearly $270,000 in purses for owner 9096 9205 Quebec Inc. of Gloucester, Ont.
