The Town of Innisfil has passed a resolution asking the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. to keep slot machines at Georgian Downs. Also, it has been reported that the town has also recommended that the Ontario government support the provincial horse-racing industry
.
An article by The Innisfil Scope has quoted councillor Doug Lougheed as saying, "This council needs to recognize the economic impact of the horse and agricultural industry. It certainly puts forth to the government what we hope they will do moving forward."
The article has also quoted town CAO John Skorobohacz as saying that the town is still looking for clarity in terms of the OLG's future plans, and that the town will be working closely with Great Canadian Gaming, owner/operator of Georgian Downs, surrounding the current issue.
"We still don't have clarity, with respect to what the future holds," Skorobohacz said. "They're (the OLG is) hoping for the private sector to come to the table, to both own and operate the respective gaming facilities. We're encouraged we have a partner in this community, Great Canadian Gaming, that owns and is the custodian of the slot facility. We will be working very closely with Great Canadian as they move to put forward a proposal. They're hopeful that by the time their fiscal year rolls around in March, they'll be in a position to make announcements on the successful proponents for these facilities."
