The class jump was big, but Rock N Roll Xample’s effort was bigger as she pulled off a 25-1 upset in Friday’s $30,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred for pacers at Mohawk Racetrack.
James MacDonald hustled Rock N Roll Xample to the top from Post 7 and together they led the field past the quarter pole in :27.2. Monkey On My Wheel made a quarter-pole move to the top in the backstretch and cleared without a tussle. She led the field to the half in :56.2 before coming under heavy pressure when Bet Ya commenced a first-over bid.
Bet Ya self-destructed when applying pressure on the leader, and Monkey On My Wheel sprinted away and took the field past the three-quarter marker in 1:23.2. The leader started to bear out in the lane, however, and Rock N Roll Xample shot through the opening and used a :27.3 closing panel to win by 1-3/4 lengths over race favourite American In Paris in 1:51.2. Beach Gal came on strong to finish third in what was her 2015 debut.
It was the third straight tally – and the 16th lifetime score – for the four-year-old daughter of Rocknroll Hanover-R Xample. Bob Hamather of Exeter, Ontario bred and owns the career winner of $204,705.
