Dunmore Alpha went wire-to-wire to score his first win of the season in Saturday afternoon’s $1,400 Open Handicap Trot at Charlottetown Driving Park
.
In his return to the track last week after a three month layoff, Dunmore Alpha was collared by Caliban Hanover at the wire, but with Caliban Hanover on the also eligible list this week, Dunmore Alpha was able to coast home unchallenged.
The seven-year-old son of Black River-Princess Victory left from Post 4 and carved out panels of :29.2, 1:01 and 1:31 en route to a 2:02 victory. Flashy Image (Gary Chappell) launched a first over bid from third during the middle panels but was only able to come within a length of the leader. When Dunmore Alpha entered the stretch, he was in the clear by 2-1/2 lengths. Katies Victory (Ken Murphy) and the pocket-sitting Hopedale Last Bill (Joey Pineau) followed him under the wire.
Driver Ed Smallwood also owns and trains Dunmore Alpha, who returned $6.80 to win as the bettor’s choice. The victory was his 26th lifetime leaving him with a total of $52,844 in the bank.
