Legal Ruling On Manitoba / MJC Issue

On Monday, May 7, the Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench which heard the legal spat between the Manitoba Jockey Club and the Province of Manitoba issued its decision on the matter. The MJC and the province have each claimed victory since the ruling.

As explained by a CBC report, the MJC initiated court action against the province after it was learned that there was a proposal to have the Red River Exhibition Association acquire Assiniboia Downs, which the MJC operates.

According to the article, the ruling states that the province cannot immediately remove as much as $5 million of the $9.5 million in funding the MJC currently receives from the province -- an aspect of the ruling which the MJC is in favour of.

Although, the ruling also states that the province has the authority to amend or change legislation so that funding which is currently earmarked for the MJC be redirected to other areas -- an aspect of the ruling that the province is in favour of.
