There was a wild finish in Tuesday’s $11,000 Preferred 2 Handicap for trotters at The Raceway at Western Fair District, and when the dust settled bragging rights belonged to Delcrest Massy.
The four-year-old son of Muscle Mass-Armbro Belandra was declared the winner in what turned out to be a thrilling, three-horse photo for the top spot in the featured event.
Delcrest Massy shot right to the lead from Post 5 for driver Alfie Carroll, and together they led the field through fractions of :29, :59.2 and 1:29.1. A :30.2 closing quarter was just enough for the gelding to win by a nose over the pocket-sitting Wattafine Rythem in 1:59.3. Third-place finisher E L Rock came up just a head short from nabbing his second consecutive victory.
Sent off at odds of 7-1 in the eight-horse affair, Delcrest Massy improved this year’s record to 6-2-0 from 12 starts for trainer Victor Puddy. The 10-time winner, who is owned by Keith Cassell of Smiths Falls, Ont, pushed his lifetime earnings over $100,000 with the win.
