Last King got up in the last stride to take home top prize in Sunday’s $15,400 final of the Spring Cleaning Stakes for trotters, and with the win the gelding became a
free horse for owner Mark Beaven of Dungannon, Ontario.
Beaven shelled out $4,500 to claim the 10-year-old son of Stoneking from last week’s second-leg assignment, and the investment paid immediate dividends thanks to Sunday’s 2:03 triumph.
Bruce Richardson got away in mid-pack with Last King, who tracked cover in the back half of the mile before prevailing by half a length in his debut for trainer Darcy McClure. Docs Krista took home the runner-up prize and third money was earned by Treasure Best.
The victory was the second of the season and the 23rd lifetime tally for the career winner of $129,117.
