Corey MacPherson made the most of his catch-driving call aboard Alldawaytocardigan, lighting the toteboard to win Sunday afternoon (May 29) at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway in the P.E.I. Colt Stakes.
MacPherson sat second in his $11,200 P.E.I. Colt Stakes Gold division for three-year-old pacing colts and stalked favourite Fern Hill General. Alldawaytocardigan lunged in the final strides to win in the stretch in 1:56.2 at 13-1 for owner Jackie Heffernan of Summerville, P.E.I., and trainer Myles Heffernan Jr.
The other $11,200 Gold division for colts was claimed by Middleton Terror and driver David Dowling in a 4-1 upset in 1:56.1 for trainer Donnie MacNeill and owners Kingsley Walsh, Frank Balcom and Sam Walsh.
The $5,600 Grassroots divisions for colts saw a win by Mitch and driver Gilles Barrieau in 1:58.3 along with a driving triple by Marc Campbell in the other divisions with Tory Time in 1:59.1, Kharlamov in 1:58.3 and Elm Grove Qwiggly in 1:58.2.
Therealprincess and driver MacPherson won the fastest $12,200 P.E.I. Colt Stakes Gold division for fillies from the Ed Doucette barn for co-owners Doucette, Grant Mann, Blaine Thibeau and Gordon MacLeod, stopping the clock in 1:55.4.
Driver Barrieau and Kevin MacLean teamed for two stakes win with Woodmere Jazz in 1:57.4 in a Gold division and Tobins Diva in 1:57 in a $6,100 Grassroots split, both for owner Reg MacPherson of Stratford, P.E.I.
The other $6,100 grassroots filly splits were claimed by Orrsterror and Gilles Barrieau in 1:59.1 and Cantstopthelovin with David Dowling in a 1:58.3 maiden-breaking score.
Live racing continues Thursday (June 2) and Saturday (June 4) at Red Shores Charlottetown and Friday evening (June 3) at Red Shores Summerside, with 6:30 p.m. (EDT) opening post times for all programs.
