Michel Nolette’s homebred The Light Speed notched another victory in the $10,000 Preferred Handicap Pace at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Sunday night (May 28) as part of a training hat trick for Guy Gagnon.
In the feature, trainer-driver Guy Gagnon grabbed control early and the race was over. The five-year-old gelded son of Moon Beam cut splits of :27, :56 and 1:23.2 with the only threat coming when pocket-sitter Mayhem Like Me pounced in the stretch. The Light Speed battled Mayhem Like Me through the lane and kept him at bay by a head to stop the clock in 1:51.1 with National Debt finishing third, beaten another four lengths.
The Light Speed bagged his 34th win from 81 starts and has now banked $246,079. He paid $2.70 to win.
Following a win in the feature, Gagnon trainees scored in two other races. Western Phil (1:53.3 winning mile; $3.60 to win) and Make It Come True (1:53.4; $7.70) also won on the 10-race card.
