The 50th season of harness racing at Kawartha Downs kicks off on Saturday, May 28 with a fun-filled lineup of activities slated all day long at the Peterborough area oval.
First post time is 6:00 p.m. but the action starts at 10:00 a.m. with the Bewdley Lions Club’s first Classic Car Show Extravaganza featuring some 250 cars and antique tractors.
Canadian rock icon Kim Mitchell hits the stage for a free show starting at 2:00 p.m. The former frontman of Max Webster (ironically the name of a former Standardbred horse owner from Ontario) who went onto a successful solo career will be supported by Dani Doucette and Peter Serrado.
The horses take centre stage next, with a nine-race card on tap. Well after the races, a fireworks show will start at approximately 9:30 p.m.
Jim Huck, General Manager at Kawartha Downs, is looking forward to the season and having fans back in attendance to enjoy all the changes and upgrades to the facility.
"We have a brand new toteboard, and with all the changes that have been done we're excited to get people back," said Huck. "Rompsen [owner Romspen Investment Corp.] has put in a lot of money, a total renovation of the main floor betting area. The infield's all been cleaned out — there's no more stock car racing...clean up of the backstretch, painting of the barns. And there are so many things in the works that have been approved. Things are looking so much better, and the future looks bright."
