Sophomores Storm Summerside For P.E.I. Colt Stakes

Sophomore stakes action returned to Red Shores on Sunday afternoon with the P.E.I. Colt Stakes at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway. The afternoon featured 14 dashes of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes for three-year-old pacing colts and fillies.

Chip Of Evil (pictured above) started her three-year-old campaign on a winning note, stopping the clock in 1:57.2 in her $18,400 P.E.I. Colt Stakes Gold division with Corey MacPherson in tow for trainer Eddy Doucette and owner Inarush Stable of Kensington. Fern Hill Indigo (Brodie MacPhee) was a close second ahead of Rollwithitdarling (Marc Campbell).

High Roller won the other $18,400 Gold split in 1:56.2 over Dusty Lane Dixie (Gilles Barrieau) and Sensational Gal (Corey MacPherson). Adam Merner drove the winning filly for trainer Melissa Rennie and owners Marsha Knox and Cory Livingston.

The $9,200 P.E.I. Colt Stakes Grassroots divisions for three-year-old pacing fillies were won by Promise Me Later (David Dowling) in 1:59.4, Redland Peaches (Mike McGuigan) in 1:57.2, Tobins Hottie (Todd Trites) in 1:59.1, Thinkingofeddie (Brady Sweet) in 1:59.1 and Woodmere Luna (Ken Murphy) in 2:00.1.

In Gold action for three-year-old pacing colts, Jackies Boy won a $18,200 division in 1:56.3 over Good Omen (Paul Langille) and Little Leroy (MacPherson). Myles Heffernan Sr. was at the lines of Jackies Boy for owner-trainer Myles Heffernan Jr.

In the other $18,200 sophomore colt Gold division of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes, Merigo Magic (Merner) dominated the entire mile to win in 1:56.3 for trainer Rennie and owners Mike May, Herman Mcquaid, Derrick Cameron and Ian Walker. Pauls Crown (Campbell) got the deuce with Check Your Chip (Heffernan Sr.) completing the triactor.

The $9,100 P.E.I. Colt Stakes Grassroots divisions were won by Mappo Oriley (Clare MacDonald) in 1:57, Reassurance (Dowling) in 1:58, Kiss My Bet (Campbell) in 1:59.4, Jack Boswall (Campbell) in 1:57.3, and Saulsbrook Litten (MacPhee) in 2:02.

Live harness racing continues on May 30 at 6 p.m. at Red Shores Charlottetown.
